Jury hears of alleged correction officer sex attacks on female inmates during first day of trial

Trial began Tuesday for a former corrections officer accused of preying on female inmates he was supposed to be protecting.

Perez’s attorney, Ken Montgomery, urged jurors to keep an open mind despite the “salacious details” from prosecutors.

“We have a rich history where the accusation can destroy a life,” he said.

In his closing statement, Perez’s lawyer countered that the inmates all had reason to “lie and fabricate” to get out of jail, noting that the case had no traditional evidence like DNA.

“It can’t simply be the stigma, that the allegations [are] enough, because then everybody would be guilty,” said attorney Kenneth Montgomery, telling jurors the feds wanted them to “convict simply because they said so and because of the stigma of these allegations.”

“This now presents some problems possibly on the juvenile side,” Montgomery said. “If you’re going to increase the amount of juveniles that the family court system now handles, then that’s going to change the culture there as well. So hopefully everyone can keep their thinking caps on.”

Rahmel Ashby cried tears of joy as the jury unanimously agreed there was not enough evidence to prove he shot Quinesha Reeves, Monay Langhorne and Rogelio King on April 29, 2014.

“It was easy. Just check the facts. Once we heard all the evidence there was no proof he did this,” said one of the jurors after the verdict was handed down in Brooklyn Supreme Court.

“I’m just glad the jury listened to the evidence and believed in the presumption of innocence,” said Ashby’s attorney Ken Montgomery, who had no-holds-barred cross-examination with the prosecutor’s witnesses .
